"This study offers a new perspective on the life and writings of Elisabeth Langgässer, one of the major authors writing in Germany during the immediate post-war period. Langgässer's beginning career as a writer was disrupted in 1936, with her expulsion from the Reichsschriftumskammer due to her paternal Jewish background.
Departing from the construction of "mixed-race" individuals in nineteenth- and twentieth-century theory and the treatment of "Jewish Mischlinge" during the Nazi period, this book examines how the theoretical and political implications of "hybridity" shaped not only Langgässer's novels, but also her self-understanding and her relationship to her daughters."
