Catherine of Siena was born in the Tuscan city of Siena in 1347, the twenty-fourth of twenty-five children. She had no formal education and lived a mere thirty-three years; yet she became a significant force in late fourteenth century Italian church and society, and now bears the title of saint, patron of Italy, and Doctor of the Roman Catholic Church. This work contains selections from the author's correspondence and her major treatise "The Dialogue of Divine Providence."
