This first issue contains as its review feature "A Public Debate on Nuclear Energy" by Hans Bethe & Barry Commoner, the text of a lecture given at Cornell by E. H. Gombrich entitled "The Unrepetant Humanist," a poetry section with contributions by A. R. Ammons, Diane Ackerman, Robert Bly, William Matthews, David Ray, May Swenson, William Stafford, Diane Wakoski. Also included are Carl Sagan's "A Cosmic Calendar," "Captain Ahab: A Novel by the White Whale," a story by Paul West, and John Cheever's "The Melancholy of Distance," as well as a number of other contributions. Illustration by Zevi Blum decorates front cover.
