This is a Chinese-language edition of Broch’s 1945 novel, which imagines the last hours of the Roman poet Virgil. “This book recounts the journey of the poet Virgil as he returns to Italy across the Adriatic Sea with Augustus’s fleet. During the final day of his life—spanning from nightfall to daybreak—he lies on his sickbed in the imperial palace, reflecting on his existence. He contemplates the perils and suffering of the world, the value of art and literature in the face of a harsh reality, and the themes of homecoming and redemption as humanity confronts fate and death; ultimately, he resolves to destroy the "Aeneid", the masterpiece he labored so long to create. Yet, when confronted directly by his close friend and the Emperor, and torn between listening and self-justification, what choice will he make? Can his soul achieve a sublime transcendence and rebirth?” (Translation of publisher’s summary)
