This study poses questions in regard to how native American societies remake their ethnic identity, the strategies developed to minimize the difficulties created by the colonial system, and the degree of coherence achieved during the colonial era. These questions are addressed on the basis of an examination of previously unpublished documentation found in Mexican and European archives.
