German text and French translation with some English."In 1882, Chancellor Bismarck initiated the correspondence between the German Empire and the Kingdom of Dahomey, today known as the Republic of Benin. King Behanzin's foreign policy was aimed at establishing normal relations with the German Empire in order to gain a partner in the conflict with France. The kingdom collapsed in 1892, and King Behanzin was imprisoned by the French. His "ever friend," Wilhelm II, did not help him. The collection of documentation offered here reveals an aspect of German colonial history and an important chapter in the national history of the Republic of Benin. It is the result of eight years of research in German archives."
