The memoirs in this volume consist, with one exception, of the "Faculty Minutes" prepared at Harvard, by a committee, after the death of professors who actively taught at Harvard until retirement....These memoirs date from the 1890s. Yet even in the period covered, which is only a fraction of Harvard's history of over 350 years, they illustrate the Harvard tradition of literary pluralism, and the refusal of the university, in this as in other subjects, to espouse a particular ideology, though several of the individuals discussed havve been creative in starting or developing grounds for a particular ideology while others have been opposed to ideology as single-minded."
