First volume of a three-volume study of the purges that followed the liberation of France and the fall of the Vichy regime. Aron begins in this book with the origins of these "purifications" in North Africa, where those who had collaborated with Vichy were removed from office or, in the case of French industrialist and member of the Vichy government Pierre Pucheu, tried and executed. Also examined within the context of greater developments are the cases of Philippe Henriot, Paul Chack and Georges Suarez.
