This book, which originally appeared under the title "Historia de una traicion" (1986), offered an account of the peace negotiations of 1984 between the government of Belisario Betancur and the guerrilla movement M-19. The peace process ultimately failed but was first met with great enthusiasm. Colombian writer Laura Restrepo (b. 1950), herself a member of the commission that served as an intermediary between the parties in conflict, offers testimony of the events in question.
Restropo is winner of the 1997 Premio Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, the 2004 Premio Alfaguara de Novela 2004 and the  Premio Nacional de Literatura de Colombia.
