Catalogue of an exhibition (Padova, 27 settembre 2003-8 febbraio 2004) devoted to the "Macchiaioli," a group of Italian artists, who were active in Tuscany between 1855 and 1865. The term "Macchiaioli" is derived from the Italian word "macchia", meaning stain or undergrowth, and although originally a perjorative term, the designation was adopted by the artists as the characterization of their group. Its most prominent members were Giuseppe Abbati, Odoardo Borrani, Vicenzo Cabianca, Niccolo Cannici, Adriano Cecioni, Giovanni Costa, Vito d'Ancona, Giovanni Fattori, Silvestro Lega, and Telemaco Signorini.  The Barbizon school served as  a paradigmatic example for the activity of these Italian artists. Profusely illustrated.
