Volume I: 1902-1927; Volume II: 1928-1941. Joyce's writing has provoked an immense quantity of critical response. Professor Deming has selected for these two volumes as many  divergent points of views as possible to provide a near-complete spectrum of the contemporary reaction to Joyce. These criticisms and opinions are chiefly concerned with Joyce's complex "intellectual machinery" and illustrate the varying degree of diffidence with which critics and writers treated Joyce. They also show the extent to which Joyce himself planned and directed his own critical reputation.
