"This Norton Critical Edition again reprints the 1848 third edition text, the last text Charlotte Brontë corrected.
The Backgrounds section has been revised to include Brontë's "Roe Head Journal," a collection of reflections and juvenilia that recorded her unhappiness as a teacher and her returns to the world of her childhood writing. There is also new material about Bronte as a student and teacher. "Charlotte Brontë and Her Readers" - a selection of reviews - includes favorable exchanges with William Makepeace Thackeray as well as Bronte's retorts to negative reviews by Elizabeth Rigby and "The Christian Remembrancer."
While retaining two essay from the first edition (those by Virginia Woolf and Robert B. Heilman), the Criticism section has been revised to include recent scholarship of "Jane Eyre," with important feminist interpretations by Adrienne Rich, Sandra M. Gilbert, and Helene Moglen, and an essay by Terry Eagleton.
The Bibliography has been expanded and updated."
