"This study of the work of Dutch documentarist Joris Ivens is the study of a period of time that started before the rise of fascism in Germany and continues today. It is an epoch that has seen fascism triumphant in Europe, the defeat of Nazi Germany, the construction of socialism in the USSR in the early thirties and in other Eastern European countries in the middle forties, the end of the traditional colonial empires, Cuba's overthrow of a dictatorship and experiment in new social relations, and the growth of China as an Asian socialist giant. Each of these events has been recorded by Ivens' camera, each of them has found a cinematic expression through the eyes and hands of this committed film-maker.
I intend to show the continuity of Ivens' political and social commitment, and the correspondence between his aesthetics and his politics." (Author's introduction)
