An anthology of the socio-philosophical and religious writings of K. P. Pobedonostsev—a distinguished statesman, legal scholar, translator, and thinker who served for twenty-five years as the Ober-Procurator of the Holy Synod (1880–1905) and was, in effect, the right-hand man of Alexander III. To his contemporaries, K. P. Pobedonostsev was perceived as a living symbol of the relationship between the Orthodox Church and the Russian State during the twilight of the Empire. The majority of the texts by K. P. Pobedonostsev included here are being published for the first time since 1917. The anthology also features literary-critical texts reflecting the history of how Pobedonostsev’s legacy was received and evaluated by Russian thinkers and political figures of that era. The book is intended for specialists—historians, philosophers, and religious scholars—as well as for a broad readership interested in Russian history and culture; it may also serve as a textbook for courses on the history of Russian culture.
