This celebrated work by Mexican author E. Poniatowska (b. 1932) provides a multi-layered and polyphonic account of the massacre by the Mexican Army of hundreds of students and demonstators on October 2, 1968 on the Plaza de las Tres Culturas in the Mexico City neighborhood of Tlatelolco. This work contains interviews with eyewitnesses, survivors, political prisoners and members of their families, interspersed with literary texts, including excerpts from pre-Hispanic texts and newspaper articles, as well as political slogans.
