This landmark work of political philosophy, consisting of volumes entitled "The Founders", "The Golden Age", and "The Breakdown" was intended to be a "handbook" on Marxism by Kolakowski, who was once an orthodox Marxist but ultimately rejected Marxism.  It was first published in Polish in Paris in 1976.
