"Everyday metaphors—viewed in cognitive linguistics as expressions of systematic thought structures—manifest themselves particularly in abstract domains of discourse. This study examines the fields of mental activity, economics, and science through extensive metaphor analysis, drawing primarily on English and German linguistic data. The cognitive metaphor theory developed by Lakoff and Johnson is discussed in its fundamental aspects and compared with competing approaches. The theory—with Kant, Blumenberg, and Weinrich presented as its precursors—undergoes critical revision in certain respects and is expanded to include, among other things, a diachronic dimension. The central thesis of unidirectionality is empirically tested through an investigation into metaphor comprehension. The book provides clear, practical guidelines for the onomasiological-cognitive method of metaphor analysis employed."
