This publication brings together works by 19th- and 20th-century French artists from private collections in Germany, taken after the war to the Soviet Union as a form of reparation, and first presented at an exhibition at the State Hermitage Museum. The exhibition catalog is full of famous names—Courbet, Degas, Renoir, Van Gogh… Many of the paintings were never exhibited even before the war. Seventy-four masterpieces of French painting, long believed lost in World War II, by many of the greatest artists of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
