Large-format volume, measuring approximately 10" x 11.5", is bound in green cloth, with stamped gilt lettering to spine and front cover. Book is like new, with solid binding, clean and bright interior. Work is illustrated with numerous tipped-in color plates. Dust jacket, with color illustration, shows minor loss at top of spine panel. Jacket is preserved in mylar cover. Cardboard slipcase exhibits light shelfwear.

The "man of Lascaux" even communicates, in this way, with the distant posterity that the present humanity is for him. This message, like no other, calls in us the recollection of the whole being. At Lascaux, what, in the depths of the earth, leads us astray and transfigures us is the vision of the most distant. This message is moreover aggravated by an inhuman strangeness. We see at Lascaux a sort of circle, an animal cavalcade, pursuing itself on the walls. But such animality is none the less the first sign for us, the blind sign, and yet the sensible sign of our presence in the universe"
