"Louis Curtiss, Kansas City's most innovative architect, came to Kansas City from his native Canada in 1887...In the intervening 37 years Curtiss worked first as a draftsman for the highly regarded firm of Adriance Van Brunt. Then for the next decade, in a productive partnership with Frederick C. Gunn (1865-1957), another talented young local architect. Then from the turn of the century until his death, 24 years later, Curtiss practiced alone. Curtiss' box score is more than 200 structures and proposed projects, additions and remodelings in 35 brilliant years. Ninety-nine buildings have been positively identified and inventoried. Of these 34 are extant: 21 are in Kansas City, including the Boley Clothing Company building (1908-09), the first glass and metal curtain wall building constructed in the United States."
