“Donald Wexler practiced architecture in Palm Springs during what he calls the “golden years” of California architecture. This period, from the postwar years through the 1970s, was a time when architects enjoyed considerable freedom to employ new materials and technologies in their search for functional and beautiful architecture.  Wexler’s practice began with the design of prefabricated houses and portable classrooms constructed of light-gauge steel. Proving durable and impervious to the elements, these projects’ thoughtful design also manifested a pure, elemental aesthetic that remains an ongoing influence for contemporary architects.
Palm Springs, a resort town that flourished in the postwar years and which drew a sophisticated clientele, offered a forum for innovative design. Wexler followed other prominent modern architects, such as Richard Neutra and Albert Frey, for whom the dry, desert climate proved optimal for maximizing the expressive possibilities of the International Style. These architects and others forged a building approach that came to be known as “Desert Modern.” In his steel homes and classrooms, Wexler innovated a sustainable architecture that was not only successful functionally, but achieved a timeless aesthetic appeal. Over the course of a career that encompassed a broad range of residential, commercial and civic commissions, Wexler will leave a lasting legacy of elegant modern design.” (Text from front flap)
