"In 1936 Thomas Mann collected his short stories and "Novellen" in a volume which he entitled "Stories of Three Decades." Rather than reprint that now incomplete collection, the three later "Novellen," "Tables of Law," "The Transposed Heads," and "The Black Swan" have been added to form the two-volume "Stories of a Lifetime." Written at dates ranging from 1896 to 1953, and including some of his finest work, this collection forms an excellent introduction to the work of one of the major writers of this century."
