"On the one hand this novel presents a vast fresco of life centering in Vienna in the twenties of this century [the 20th], tracing links between the lowest criminal stratum, the intellectual bourgeoisie, and the palace of the aristocrats. On the other hand it illustrates and explores a system of insights into how human beings pass through sucessive states of understanding themselves and the issues of life. THE DEMONS is many-sided: at times powerful, macabre, touching, charming, illuminating." (Text by Thornton Wilder appearing on side of slipcase).
