This book "contains "The Sleep of Reason," a remarkable multimedia exploration of the effects of political oppression on the creative mind of the painter Goya, and "The Foundation," set in a cell of a political prison that oneo f the inmates believes to be a comfortable philanthropic institution. Both plays employ extensively the striking visual and aural elements characteristic of Buero's work and offer prime examples of his "immersion-effects." The third play, "In the Burning Darkness," was written at the very beginning of Buero's career. In this seminal early work, the playwright deals with a tragic conflict between a young idealistic dreamer and a threatened defender of the status quo. The translator presents in the introduction a concise overview of Buero's thirty-five-year career and defines his principal thematic concerns as well as the visual and aural effects he uses to achieve a participatory theatre." Antonio Buero Vallejo (1916-2000) was a Spanish playwright associated with the Generation of '36.
